When to Travel to Argentina

When to Travel to Argentina? This is an important question to consider, especially knowing that Argentina is a massive country that covers much of the South American continent. In fact, not only is it one of the most diverse landscapes but it is also the 2nd largest country in South America. As such, the weather in Argentina varies greatly according to where in the country you are and when you travel to Argentina. There are significant differences in temperature range from the northern to the southern regions of Argentina.  For example, while it may be hot and steamy in the jungles of Iguazu Falls along the Brazilian border, it may be freezing and snowy in the southern-most city of Argentina; Ushuaia.

It is important for you to plan when to travel to Argentina, keeping in mind that the weather in Argentina is nearly opposite to the seasons in the USA. That is, during the winter in the USA it will be warm and summery weather in Argentina (December-April), while during the summer months in the USA there will be cooler weather in Argentina from May-August (with snow and wintry weather in Argentina´s southern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego). Basically, the weather in Argentina is based on the four seasons:

  1. Summer weather in Argentina is from December to March
  2. Autumn weather in Argentina is from March to May
  3. Winter weather in Argentina is from June to August
  4. Spring weather in Argentina is from mid-September to November

Choosing the time of year to travel to Argentina depends on what you want to do.

Argentina can be separated into three big regions: the North, the Center, and the South. Of course, such a diverse country has a lot to offer for people with varying tastes, and climates can be tricky to plan in advance depending on the areas you want to visit.

  • The North

For Argentinians, “the North” is more than just Salta, Jujuy and Misiones, though those are the focus for foreign travelers. Misiones, in the Iguazu Falls area, has a tropical climate with humid and warm weather in general all year, but if you want to know the perfect time to go there, here’s the intel.

Iguazu Falls

Close to Iguazu, the Iberá Wetlands offer a unique scenery for wildlife and cultural tradition. May and June are good months to visit this region as they are cooler months. Salta and Jujuy are also locations with high temperatures during the day and very low at night. Nonetheless, daytime temperatures are more pleasant in winter than summer, when temperatures can rise above 100°F. But if you do dare to visit Salta and Jujuy in November (Argentina’s summer), be prepared to be amazed by the lush green in this arid land. An important event that takes place annually in the town of Jujuy is the Fiesta de la Pachamama in the month of August, during which natives celebrate the importance of Mother Earth.

  • The Center

Almost every province of central Argentina has something special to offer. Buenos Aires can get quite humid and heavy during the summer, and chilly in the winter like any other city, but, fortunately, there is no snow around. If you are a tango-lover, the Buenos Aires Tango Festival in August should be on your travel bucket list. Here, you’ll have the unique opportunity to enjoy the performances of the best tango dancers from around the world.

Mendoza’s Vineyards

On the other side of the country, Mendoza is a top-notch choice for wine lovers. Summer and Mendoza are the perfect match to enjoy the Vendimia festival in March, which celebrates the harvest of the area’s grapes. Here’s the info about the best time to go wine-tasting in Mendoza. Also, summer in Mendoza could be a great chance to dare to go rafting along the energetic rivers!

  • The South

Summer is the preferred season to go to Patagonia due to the low temperatures in other times of the year, and since the warmer months mark the starting point of the fishing season. Patagonia has so much to offer! On the coast, Puerto Madryn and Península Valdés are well-known destinations to spot whales, penguins and sea lions. Late June is the time when the whales arrive, but September is the best time to see the whole bunch of animals! Bariloche and the Lake District offer different activities depending on the time of year: camping, skiing, horseback riding… Spring and Autumn are great seasons to see Bariloche in its different colors!

In El Calafate, typically in January or February, the Lake Festival celebrations commence – Fiesta del Lago- filled with interesting musical performances. Three hours away, El Chaltén is a great combination. As most Patagonian locations, the best time to visit is from September to March. Between February and  March, the National Trekking Festival takes place, during which many competitions and outdoor activities take place to celebrate the first attemp of an Argentine man to conquer the Mount Fitz Roy. Ushuaia, also known as the city of the End of The World, is located in the southernmost are of the country. Appreciated for its good-quality cuisine and its adrenaline-pumping activities, is also the home of the Tierra del Fuego National Park.

  • What To Avoid

Argentine summer vacations from school take place in December until the beginning of March, during which most families take the chance to travel around the country. The winter holidays for students are in July,  so this is another time of year when most families travel and the accommodation availability is significantly reduced and the attractions become a little crowded.
