When planning a trip to El Chalten you will no doubt be licking your lips with the prospect of reaching the trekking capital of Argentina. Glaciers, lakes, rivers and forest will guide your way around this beautiful destination which still remains one of the hidden gems of southern Argentina. The landscapes are dry and dramatic and will take your breath away with every successful trek.
From Buenos Aires it is a 20-hour coach journey south to the tip of the nation. You will travel first to the city of El Calafate (well-known as the gateway to the great Perrito Moreno Glaciar). Argentina is blessed with a very comfortable and efficient bus service and we would highly recommend selecting the Super-Cama option which comes with a fully extendable chair that becomes a bed whenever you please. Believe us, the further you glide down towards Patagonia and the colder the weather gets outside, the more you will appreciate the luxury of Argentine bus travel. Observe Argentina’s stunning countryside, clutching a glass of fine wine and float your way to Patagonia. A journey in Super- Cama will cost around AR$ 700 by bus.
From El Calafate you will take a comfortable public bus 3 hours to El Chalten. The route is beautiful and takes you on an exciting journey through the desert of Southern Patagonia. You will pass through La Leona river, that connects Lake Argentino and Lake Viedma. By the river you will see La Leona Road House where once Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid after robbing a bank where hidden for almost a month.
Usually on arrival to El Chalten, the bus stops 15 minutes at the Park Ranger office to provide general advice about the park and recommend certain treks. They are very informative and enthusiastic to share their love for the Park. Be prepared for an exciting day in the bosom of nature at its wildest. El Chalten offers a range of options for all kinds of difficulty of trekking.
You can go for a short 3 Kilometre walk, with stunning views of the Rio de las Vueltas, Lenga Forest and the chance to see all kind of birds (great woodpecker spotting opportunity). If you are, however, looking for great mountain views, in an hour and a half you can be at the Cerro Torreview point. For trekking fans, continue all the way to Torre base or go for the 8 hours trekking for the most impressive view of Mt. Fitz Roy and the whole massif by Laguna de Los Tres path. This is a trek that becomes difficult in the last bit but totally worth the effort.
The best thing about trekking in El Chalten is that you can choose where and when to go, and at your own pace, since the paths are self-guided and very well marked and maintained.
We will provide you with complete trekking information of the park, so that you can decide the best plan to make the best of your day.
