*UPDATE: The Brazilian government has announced that visa-free entry will become available to citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan, effective June 17, 2019.
Upon arriving to Buenos Aires, many US citizens plan on visiting the most famous waterfalls in the world, Iguazu. And while most people agree that the Argentine side is more impressive (because one can get up close to the falls and feel the cool mist on their face as they peer into the Garganta del Diablo, Devil’s Throat), it is certainly worth visiting the Brazilian side for its impressive panoramic views of the falls. However, what about a Brazil visa for US Citizens?
In order to enter Brazil, US citizens need to get a Brazilian tourist visa before traveling to Iguazu. In fact, it is ideal for US citizens to get their Brazilian visa before coming to South America, however, if you find yourself in Buenos Aires, the Brazilian Consulate should be able to help.
The Brazilian Consulate (Consulado-Geral do Brasil en Buenos Aires) is located at – Carlos Pellegrini 1363 5the floor – C1011AAA – Ciudad de Buenos Aires – Argentina, and the telephone number is (5411) 4515-652. Their website is a great resource for information and explains the process and documents needed to apply for the visa.
When I applied for the visa (yes, I am a US citizen), I made an appointment via their online calendar for Thursday at 11am. After a 10 minute chat with a very friendly staff member who reviewed my paperwork and passport, I was advised that all was in order and gave them my passport for processing. I then went to pay the Brazilian Tourist Visa fee at the nearby Itau Bank, and then I could pick up my passport with the Brazilian Tourist Visa the very next day.
Overall, it was a very efficient and pleasant experience and the professionals at the Brazilian Consulate in Buenos Aires were a lovely bunch. Now I can’t wait to visit Iguazu Falls with Say Hueque.
