When to Travel to El Chalten, Patagonia

When planning a trip to El Chalten you will undoubtedly be looking forward to the prospect of visiting the trekking capital of Argentina. Glaciers, lakes, rivers and forests will guide your way around This beautiful destination, still remains one of the hidden gems of southern Argentina.

The landscapes are dry and dramatic and will take your breath away with every successful trek. The best thing about trekking in El Chalten is that you can choose where and when to go, and at your own pace, as the paths are self-guided and very well marked and maintained. Yet, like any trekking destination, there are particular times of the year that have the best weather to make the best of the adventure.

So when is best time to travel to El Chalten, Patagonia?

The best time to visit the national park is during the Southern summer; between late December and late February. The weather is not only more hospitable, but daylight hours are greatly lengthened by the extreme southern latitude.

However summer weather still brings many windy and frosty days. Outside of this time frame, the weather can often become too extreme for most of the public. During the southern winter, El Chalten is blessed with only a few hours of daylight each day and temperatures can drop very low.

Cool summers define the area, with temperatures lower than 16 °C (61 °F) during the warmest month (January). Winter is relatively cold, with an average high temperature in July of 5 °C (41 °F), and an average low of -4 °C (27 °F).
