Trips to Patagonia: Argentina’s Beautiful Southern Region

Patagonia- a land of stunning beauty and natural wonder. Patagonia is located in southern South America and is shared by Chile and Argentina. Traveling through Patagonia provides the visitor with a truly unique perspective and appreciation. Star-filled skies, stunning mountain scenery and wild plains all offer countless ways to enjoy the great, and undeveloped, outdoors. Imagine massive Argentine glaciers splashing into crystal blue lakes, as the Perito Moreno Glacier calves daily into Lake Argentina.

Picture herds of wild guanacos (relatives of the llama) traveling Torres del Paine’s rugged and windswept plains. Discover un-crowded mountain trails that wind their way to hidden mountain lakes, such as Laguna de los Tres in Chalten or Llao LLao Forest in Bariloche. Ride horses on Patagonia’s open plains and savor succulent barbequed lamb and regional wines at historic estancias (ranches).

The vast, windy, treeless plateau south of the Rio Colorado is called Patagonia. The Atlantic coast is rich in marine life, most easily seen around Puerto Madryn. In the south of the region is the Parque Nacional de los Glaciares, Glacier National Park, with glacier cruises on lakes full of ice floes beside the Perito Moreno Glacier. In the north of the region is Argentina’s Welsh community.

Patagonia is sub-divided into the provinces of Neuquen, Rio Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz and the Territory of Tierra del Fuego. The area covers 780.000 square km. Wide areas have less than one person to the square km., and there are virtually no trees except in the north and the Andean foothills. Temperatures are moderated by the proximity of the sea and are singularly mild, neither rising high during the summer nor falling low during the winter. The land is more or less desert. Deep crevices or canyons intersect the land from east to west. The great sheep estancias are along these canyons, sheltered from the wind. Most of the land is devoted to sheep raising. This land will captivate those who love wide-open spaces, endless roads and infinite skies. The further south one travels, the longer the twilight become.
