Our list of favorite things to do in Ushuaia, the southernest city of the world!Once an important hub for European commerce, today Ushuaia is largely uninhabited, making it an ideal tourist heaven for travelers looking to explore its unique location and scenic views.
Our favorite things to do in Ushuaia:
Tierra del Fuego National Park: Complete with waterfalls, forests, mountains and glaciers, the Tierra del Fuego National Park is an embodiment of Ushuaia’s beautiful scenery. Accessible by car or train it is the world’s southernmost national park.
Visitors can hike the park’s various trails, take a boat ride on the Beagle Channel or spend the day exploring the park’s unique wildlife (amazing spot for bird watchers).
Beagle Channel: As one of three navigable passages between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the Beagle Channel is without a doubt one of the favorite things to do in Ushuaia.
A fairly narrow passage, which renders it inaccessible for large commercial shipping vessels, the Beagle Channel is ideal for smaller boats providing tours of the area. A cruise along the channel is highly recommended and will offer you the chance to see Ushuaia and the arctic wildlife inhabiting the surrounding waters like never before.
Lapataia Bay (Bahia Lapataia): Located inside the Tierra del Fuego National Park, the Lapataia Bay is one of Ushuaia’s primary bodies of water and an ideal attraction for experiencing the nature of the area. Hike around the bay to have a picnic lunch and enjoy the scenery or perhaps even venture out onto the water. Available through a number of local tour companies, padling on the Lapataia Bay is highly recommended as one of the top things to do in Ushuaia.
Cerro Castor Ski Resort: With 28 different ski trails included, Cerro Castor offers an incredible skiing experience for every type of skier. In addition, due to its geographical location, Cerro Castor is able to offer a longer ski season than other resorts, running from June to October. This attraction is a guaranteed crowd pleaser and a place you will definitely want to check out while in Ushuaia.
Heli Ushuaia: If you’re looking for an exciting activity that’s just a bit out of the ordinary, check outHeli Ushuaia, a company that provides the unique experience of flying over the City at the End of the World in a helicopter. There are several different routes you can choose from: one excursion flies over the beautiful Esmeralda Lagoon; another more general route whizzes high above the entire city, giving passengers a grand tour of the area from the sky.
Get in touch with Penguins: There are three species of penguins in Ushuaia—the most common (and likely to be on the island in great numbers) are Magellanic penguins. With different options (you might want to walk with the penguins or see them from the Beagle Channel) this is for sure one of the top things to do in Ushuaia.
