Famous for its arctic wildlife, Puerto Madryn is Argentina’s prime location for whale watching. Located on the Golfo Nuevo, which is formed by the Valdes Peninsula and Punta Ninfas, Puerto Madryn offers numerous excursions for tourists looking to explore the natural wonders of the region and the creatures that inhabit it.
One of the bests parts about visiting Puerto Madryn is it’s perfectly located to see a variety of arctic animals in the wild, but also provides you with ways to learn about what you’re seeing.
In the Valdes Peninsula, you will be able to see a varitey of animals. For this reason, the park has been named as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Make sure you know what animals you will be able to see when you are there because everything is season. The best time to go is November through January because that is typically when you have the best chance to see Sea Elephants, Orcas and Southern Right Whales.
You’ll also see rhea, sheep, guanacos and foxes if you’re lucky!
Other fan favorites that can be spotted in this peninsula nature reserve are magellic penguins and sea lions.
Penguin season is from October to April, while the whales migrate to the area to mate and give birth between May and December. You will enjoy the experience of seeing these animals up close, as a day tour offers the chance to view them in their natural habitat and even interact with them.
If you absolutely love penguins, consider venturing out to Punta Tombo which is the largest colony in the western hemisphere of Magellenic Penguins. It’s an easy three hour drive from Puerto Madryn and makes for a great day trip destination.
For an even closer look at Puerto Madryn’s wildlife than that offered on a boat tour consider diving in and joining them under water!
If you’re looking for something completely unique to do while in Puerto Madryn, snorkeling or diving with sea lions is a great idea and is something the whole family will enjoy. The sea lions will swim with you in the water and you’ll have a chance to pet and play in the reserve. Plus, it gives you an upclose and personal experience with animals.
If you’re looking to learn more, consider stopping by the Natural Science and Oceanographic Museum in Puerto Madryn. This incredible museum sits at the top of a hill, overlooking the ocean in Puerto Madry. Here you will learn about the whales of Puerto Madryn through numerous educational exhibits. Housed in a century-old, ocean-side palace, this museum offers incredible views of the ocean while you learn about the creatures that inhabit it.
